Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Is responsible to perform complex data mining and analysis in an evolving property environment that requires the ability to source, normalize, cleanse and analyse data, identify patterns, and trends, build models, develop or configure systems and tools to synthesize the data into information in a format and presentation means that adds value to our clients and management
  • Provide users’ with ad-hoc and/or planned requests for data extractions and reports.

Systems and Database Analysis

  • Is responsible for the continuous research, development, testing, implementation, support, enhancement and maintenance of the Geo-Spatial Portal in line with the changing business needs and special projects.
  • Ensure developments and enhancements are in line with industry best practices and frameworks, that the governance and control standards, applicable to Transnet are implemented and tested regularly.

  • Interact with all the stakeholders and design a system that meets the stakeholder’s objectives and is practical to develop, implement and maintain.
  • Oversee database design and management of the Geo-Spatial systems.
  • Liaise with CIO office to ensure continued alignment of services and objectives

Project Management

Undertake project management tasks for data, applications and system enhancement projects. Is responsible for coordinating between the clients and development team and to complete a project on time and within budget, scope, and quality and user acceptance.

Systems Support and Monitoring

  • Is accountable to ensure the Geo-Spatial Portal is up and running 99.9% during working hours 07:30 – 16:00. This entails proactive actions, capacity planning and monitoring of system logs.
  • Provide applications and systems support to ICT development team for integration purposes and other needs with Geo Spatial systems.
  • Provide user’s support in relation to systems and applications on issues related to the design, development, deployment and functioning of mission-critical information and software systems, particularly those that impact the property management and particularly Geo-Spatial environment.
  • Support initiation, planning, gathering requirements, implementation and control of property related projects for MDS, Geo-Spatial and its clients.
  • Oversee and/or conduct user training on applications and applications enhancements.

Research and Development

  • Conduct continuous research into data analysis methodologies, systems development frameworks and security risks.
  • Continuously plan, develop and implement enhancements that mitigate system short-falls and risks, and enhance systemfunctionality and ensure aligned to the changing business environment.

Position outputs:

  • Execute data mining projects and research exercises that require analysis and a problem solving approach by identifying relevant trends, preparing visualisations, design dashboards and reports for sponsors and management.

  • Work to develop existing reports and improve departmental efficiency, without compromising quality and provide modelling support to the business to enable accurate future planning decisions to be made.
  • Assure quality of data reporting and solutions by ensuring a rigorous test methodology is implemented and adhered too, responding to team members' concerns; coordinating requirements with interested departments.
  • Provide technical support to the Geo-Spatial Inventory Manager in the development and delivery of business intelligence solutions and ongoing development and maintenance of the Geo-Spatial Portal.
  • Writing and maintaining technical documentation for data mining and development projects, research exercises, dashboards, reports, other developments and enhancements; such as proposals, business and functional specification documents and user manuals.
  • Continuously look to improving the following; database systems, Geo-Spatial portal, systems and business processes, user support.
  • Ensuring the complete approved development lifecycle is used to support the needs of Geo-Spatial and its clients and that industry trend, best practices and governance and controls are implemented, tested and enforced.
  • Implement solutions by monitoring project progress; tracking action items; conducting design and implementation reviews; examining, researching, and resolving issues; escalating issues to appropriate authority;
  • As the need arises the writing and editing content and code, designing webpage layout, determining technical requirements, updating websites and solving coding problems.
  • Reviewing the chosen methodologies to ensure that they remain current and are the best fit for the Geo-Spatial environment.
  • Accomplishes work requirements by orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching employees; following production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; identifying work process improvements.
  • Setting and enforcement of database standards and controls by developing policies, procedures, and naming conventions.
  • Undertake root cause analysis of system and database problem to identify the key issues and initiate and manage remedial action
  • Proactive monitoring of database, application and system logs and responding to issues before they become a problem.
  • Undertake and maintain a system and database capacity plan and liaise with IT and Management to ensure that capacity issues do not result in performance issues or failures.
  • Meets budget requirements by monitoring expenses; implementing cost-saving actions.
  • Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
  • Report monthly on sections activities vs the business plan, projects, development and research by specified due dates.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement a comprehensive annual business management plan aligned with the Geospatial inventory strategy, performance management and budget for the maintenance of the Geo-Spatial portal and data analytics responsibilities.
  • Monitor Geo-Spatial Portal’s response times, evaluating user satisfaction levels and recommending improvement.
  • Extract data in order to assist the other sections in answering property related queries
  • Ensure staff and this position holder has the necessary skills to perform their duties.
  • Attend all Technical committee meetings and address issues raised at the forum that fall within the Geo-Spatial Inventory’s ambit.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • A minimum of a 4 year Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technologies or Geomatics with maths, statistics, data-metrics, and / or data driven computation as a major.
  • Minimum 5 years work experience in the property related industry.
  • Minimum 3 years work experience in IT related duties.
  • Ability to communicate with peers, managers and clients.
  • Experience in writing project documentation.
  • Experience in managing a small staff complement.
  • Additional industry training in related fields will be an added advantage
  • Training and knowledge of Reporting and Business Intelligence will be an added advantage

Competencies:

  • Have advance knowledge and experience in the design, development and programing of web applications.
  • Applicable legislative and regulatory framework
  • Project management capacity, including aspects of process development and execution.
  • Principles and practice of immovable asset management
  • Knowledge and experience of database design, development, scripting, query and report writing.
  • Advanced computer literacy in the following: MS Access, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Word
  • A working knowledge of SAP RE, SAP Data warehouse and BOBJ would be an advantage
  • Working knowledge of current Internet technologies used by Transnet.
  • Knowledge of GIS applications and the ability to read maps would be an advantage.
