Position Purpose:

  • Collaborate with Transnet Ports Terminals (TPT) in the development of the overall Transnet Ports Maintenance strategy and plan, which is aligned to both TE and TPT’s overall business strategies and visions.
  • Provide strategic direction and operational control in the implementation of the strategy and plan, ensuring comprehensive technological capacity and sustainability to achieve organisational objectives.
  • Champion the delivery of operational excellence in the maintenance of Ports business products and components.

Position outputs:

  • Develop the Transnet Ports Maintenance strategy in conjunction with TPT and plan in line with the overall Transnet Business strategy.
  • Plan and ensure the effective implementation of the Ports Maintenance strategy so that the objectives in the strategy are met within the required budget, time and quality requirements.
  • Develop and implement effective plans, strategies procedures and policies and monitor them to ensure that they meet legal requirements, business needs and organisational objectives and they reflect good practices.

  • Drives adoption of new process or products into Ports maintenance and services and product readiness for commercial launch.
  • Translates customer requirements into state-of-the-art maintenance and services strategies and processes, resulting in cost-effective processing and profitable maintenance and services of Transnet Engineering products.
  • Create, implement and manage systems, processes and policies which ensure proactive and efficient operations. Particular focus on near-real time monitoring of assets
  • Lead and direct the team within Ports Maintenance and services business unit so that they are motivated and have access to the required resources in order to meet the objectives set for them.
  • Ensure that maintenance and services capabilities meet or exceed all industry and customer requirements for cost, quality and responsiveness.
  • Development of the maintenance and services organization towards higher capability and performance to meet future needs.
  • Responsible for ensuring full compliance to all applicable requirements and specifications imposed by the company, the customer and/or the industry while seeking creative cost-effective solutions, challenging the status quo and evolving the culture within maintenance and services department.
  • Ensure international best operational and maintenance and services standards are implemented in all products
  • Develop, implement and monitor Performance Indicators for each area within each sector and implement in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Implement short/medium term project and plans connected to operation/function strategy as direction and lead focused innovation in operational effectiveness and efficiencies.
  • Drives the long-range strategic planning process for Ports maintenance and services by overseeing and supporting all maintenance and services operations, including maintenance and services itself, production control, inventory control and sustaining engineering.
  • Analysis of industry research to determine and give guidance on legislative/ regulatory requirements and implications thereof, future / anticipated amendments to current and relevant legislation, regulations and policies, national and international trends in operational productivity improvements and resource requirements.
  • Initiated dialogue and engage with key stakeholders including customers, suppliers, regional government and industry, as required, to ensure effective internal and external stakeholder management.
  • Make sound decisions to prevent serious impacts on the overall success of maintenance and services operations.
  • Manage relevant role players in accordance with business requirements and dependencies and represent Transnet Engineering in the interactions with stakeholders.
  • Ensure that maintenance and services and operations budgets are in line with the business and project plans. Monitor the expenditure against the budget and ensure that spending occurs within the budgetary restrictions
  • Ensure that human resources needed to efficiently achieve goals and targets is available, establish an effective the management team and manage their performance, drive capability development initiatives for direct reports and other functional managers.
  • Agree and monitor skills development plans for direct reports and other functional managers, drive the values and behaviours required to create a positive and motivational culture.
  • Lead and ensure that governance structures as per agreed upon terms of reference, ensure proper delegation of authority to all direct subordinates including functional managers and ensure that audits are conducted as per company guidelines, and recommendations implemented.
  • Establish overall direction while creating and implementing a vision for continuous improvement of operational services at a detail level as well as higher organizational level; work with others to establish methodologies to resolve process issues.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering / Operations / Business Management.
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in operations or production environment of which at least 5 years Executive managerial experience in a large organisation with a complex operations environment
  • Postgraduate and Management Development qualifications will be an added advantage
  • Background in Port Maintenance business environment
