Laboratory Technician - Anglo American

The purpose of the Technician roles in Iron Ore is to operate sample preparation equipment in a routine Iron Ore laboratory and produce a pulp sample. The pulp sample is analysed in the routine Iron Ore analysis laboratory to determine loss on ignition, Relative density, and total sulphur. The pulp sample is also fused to produce a glass bead which is then analysed by XRF.

Key responsibilities:

• Ensure that the work area is tidy and safe to work in.
• Perform SLAM and ensure that Continuous Risk Assessment books are signed
• Attend and participate in green area meetings
• Report all incidents within the shift
• Report absenteeism to the Shift Supervisor
• Report stock levels or consumption to the Shift Supervisor
• Maintain ISO Accreditation
• Always ensure accuracy and precision of results
• Report non-conforming work
• Work according to standard operating procedures
• Ensure that all quality checks are performed and authorised
• Prepare a specified number of samples per shift
• Ensure that worksheets are created to specifications. Replicates selected for specific samples must correspond in all methods
• Attend priority work first. These would include repeats and urgent work.
• Adhere to the Planned task Observation schedule
• Ensure that l reports are approved before dispatching work to the next work area.

Qualifications:

• Matric with Maths and Science
• Basic computer literacy

Role-specific Knowledge:

• LIMS operation
• Basic equipment calibration and operation
• First level quality control
• Provides a consistent outstanding role model in relation to safety practices with a deep understanding of the importance of safety
