Workplace: 158 Civic Boulevard, Metro Centre

Designation: Copy Writer/Journalist

Salary Range: R8 329.27 pm (cost-to-company, basic salary, no benefits)

 

Primary Function:

Ensure journalist/copy writing service and administrative support within the Group Communication and Marketing Department.

Key Learning Areas:

  • Generating content and contributing to content production initiatives for various platforms managed by the department (e.g. Mahungu Ya Vatirhi, CoJ messages, bulk SMSes, the City’s website and digital screens).
  • Applying the rules of grammar, fixing ‘lifeless’ language, as well as assessing and critiquing the underlying structure of a document.
  • Recognising and dealing with plagiarism and copyright infringement.

Leading Competencies:

  • Strong literacy skills, i.e., good written English, report-writing and proofreading skills.
  • Good understanding of media and digital channels, how they interact and work to reach target audiences.
  • Know-how to gather and process information for new and improved content (i.e. research capabilities).
  • Work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Attention to detail, patience and concentration.
  • Accountability and time management.

Appointment Requirements:

  • Matric (NQF 4) plus a certificate, diploma or degree in journalism or copy-writing at NQF 6 level;
  • Must be creative, detail-oriented and able to write coherently (i.e. good grammar and punctuation skills);
  • Basic understanding of the inner workings of a newsroom and editorial processes;
  • Basic understanding of how to leverage social media, find out things and get in contact with people and spot trends;
  • Ability to write and translate content into at least three (3) different official languages;
  • Computer literacy (MS Office applications);
  • Must be able to work extended hours as and when required;
  • Open to applicants not older than 35; and
  • Only City of Joburg residents will be considered.
