Position Purpose:
- To conduct regular inspections on the bulk handling equipment and routes.
- To be the second eyes of the operator when offloading trains, stacking or reclaiming ore and loading vessels with various commodities.
- To prepare route, at various stages of the operational process and to advise the operator of any unsafe conditions that may pose a safety risk for both employees and equipment.
- To ensure safe and contamination free operations
- To operate the bulk handling equipment in the absence of the operator.
Position outputs:
- The OBLA will be allocated to task and location of work at the start of the shift
- Conduct regular inspections on the bulk handling equipment and routes during the course of the shift.

- Complete equipment check sheets at least twice per shift (at the start of the shift, when ownership and responsibility to accepted and at the end of the shift to ensure proper handover to the next shift)
- Make sure that before a machine travels there is no obstruction/s in the way of the machine.
- Report and communicate clearly any obstructions observed immediately to the Operator when acting as an OBHE:
- Ensure safe operation of tipplers, apron-feeders, positioners, stackers, reclaimers, tripper cars, ship-loaders and conveyers at all times.
- Operate tippler to off-load customer commodities from loaded wagons in a safe and efficient manner.
- Operate tippler positioner to position loaded wagons in the tippler drum.
- Operate apron-feeders to load various commodities on conveyors.
- Ensure safe and accurate positioning of the stacker
- Ensure safe and efficient operation of stackers to off-load various commodities on to stockpiles.
- Ensure safe and accurate positioning of the reclaimer.
- Ensure a safe and efficient operation of the reclaimer when reclaiming various commodities from stockpiles.
- Ensure safe and accurate positioning of the shiploader
- Ensure safe and efficient operation of the shiploaders during the vessel loading process.
- Ensure that no cargo contamination occurs during the handling of customer commodities.
- Ensure clear communication clearly with all role players at all times.
- Assist maintenance with fault finding on breakdowns.
- Keep a watchful eye out for any dust occurrences during the off loading, reclaiming and vessel loading process and report immediately.
- Ensure safe operation of the positioner during Positioner On Board (POB) operation and report any unsafe conditions immediately to the operator and/or supervisor on duty.
- Inspect rails thoroughly for any cracks, loose bolts and/or any other unsafe condition.
- During the shunting process:
- Visually check that the first wagon’s buffer is aligned after first tip to allow for proper coupling of the yellow trucks.
- Continuously communicate with the tippler operator for the accurate placement of the first 2 wagons into the tippler drum and confirm correct Telemeter reading with the operator.
- Visually check that all the empties that are shunted back to TFR are empty.
- Report any partially off loaded wagons to the Train side supervisor.
- Check areas that require cleaning on the machine and clean them.
- Supervise cleaners on the machine or on route during, e.g. breakdowns, block chutes, after vessel completion and/or ore spillage incidents, etc. in order to reduce time lost due to cleaning.

- Ensure compliance to Lean six sigma 5S methodology on all equipment and operational areas. (Sort, Shine, Set in Order, Standardise and Sustain)
- Note strange smells and report them
- Note strange noises and report them responsibility to accepted and at the end of the shift to ensure proper handover to the next shift)

Qualifications & Experience:
- Matric/ NQF4
- Read, write and speak English
