The Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa was established on 1 January 1946, as the first professional representation of pharmacy in South Africa. The PSSA  aims to improve the use of medication in pharmacy and to promote developments in patient care. The PSSA is offering bursaries to pharmacy students who are in their second year of study and above. The bursary is only open to students who are South African citizens.

Candidate Requirements: 

Undergraduate Bursary requirements:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be studying a Parmacy qualification
  • Financial need–  family income must not exceed R130 000 per annum before tax 
  • Good academic record – all subjects must be passed – minimum 60% average overall
  • Dependants of the supporter still studying – tertiary institutions, scholars
  • Other financial assistance – bursaries, loans etc. Special circumstances
  • Sponsor specific criteria

Postgraduate Bursary requirements:

  • Be a South African student
  • Be a full-time pharmacy student registered with a School/Department/Faculty of Pharmacy
  • Be a PSSA member (currently membership is free – send email to nitsa@pharmail.co.za for application form)
  • Requirements are weighted on the basis of Academic potential (60%) and Financial need (40%)

Conditions of Bursary: 

The bursary is repayable upon the following conditions:

  •  if the student discontinues their studies
  • if the student fails any academic year

The bursary is not renewable, applicants will have to reapply should they require financial assistance to fund other years of their studies.
