Duties
Operation of a USG-owned or leased motor vehicle in a safe, efficient manner for the official transportation of passengers and/or cargo in the vehicle. Functions as post messenger as directed.
Chauffeur Responsibilities:
- Serves as one of several motor pool chauffeur positions, receiving work assignments via U.S. Consulate Cape Town’s form mechanism which is coordinated through the post motor pool dispatcher; usually with specific instructions and details pertaining to the transport of State and/or other Agency personnel or cargo assigned to/visiting Mission SA.
- Operates Mission SA vehicles in the transportation of official U.S. visitors in the country, either in the support of Mission SA-related activities or because these visitors are participating in an activity supported by the USG, i.e. conference/meeting participants, etc.
- Assumes Mission-SA duty driver responsibility on a rotational basis. Incumbents may be required to make trips to adjacent locations and trips that require overnight stays. The driver’s primary duty station will be at the U.S. Consulate located in Cape Town.
- Maintains vehicle in a clean and serviceable condition, including cleaning of the vehicle's interior and washing the exterior of the vehicle. Performs basic vehicle checks of a preventative nature in accordance with established schedules and policies.
- Maintains up-to-date vehicle logs as required by applicable regulations. Prepares trip reports, vehicle use and fuel logs. Estimates the fuel consumption and/or need for trips. Should have basic numerical skills.
- In addition to the Consul General in Cape Town, the driver may provide support for the Mission-SA Ambassador or DCM in the absence of their regularly-assigned chauffeurs as directed.
- Safeguards U.S. Government property and uses U.S. Government resources efficiently, which includes the fuel-efficient operation of the Embassy motor vehicles.
- Messengers Responsibilities: To include delivery and pickup of various letters, packages and newspapers for State and other USG agencies resident at post. Delivers customs documents for processing, pick up driver's licenses and vehicle tags from the License Bureau. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Evaluations
Requirements:
EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of three (3) years of professional driving experience is required.
JOB KNOWLEDGE:
- Must have a good working knowledge of the extended Cape Town metropolitan area and good knowledge of the consular district served by the U.S. Consulate Cape Town and its environs, including driving routes and traffic patterns. Must be familiar with the location of hospitals, police and fire stations within assigned duty areas and immediate surroundings.
